Freight class lookup (NMFC)

Freight class is the standard (NMFC) way to categorize LTL freight — from class 50 (dense and cheap) to class 500 (light and bulky). Enter your density to see the estimated class band, or read the full table below.

Don’t know your density? Use the density calculator first. Open the density calculator

Estimated class

Enter a density in pounds per cubic foot (PPCF) to see its estimated class band.

How freight class is determined

The NMFC system classifies freight on four characteristics. Density is usually the biggest driver, but it is not the only one:

  • 01

    Density

Weight against space. Denser freight classes lower (cheaper). This is the factor this tool calculates.

  • 02

    Stowability

How well freight stacks and loads alongside other freight. Odd shapes or non-stackable loads can raise the class.

  • 03

    Handling

How much care or special equipment the freight needs to move. Fragile or awkward freight can raise the class.

  • 04

    Liability

The risk of damage, theft, or damaging other freight, plus value per pound. Higher risk or value can raise the class.

Density-to-class guide (general reference)

The standard published guide maps density bands to freight classes. We highlight your band when you enter a density above:

Density (PPCF) Estimated class
50 or more 50
35–50 55
30–35 60
22.5–30 65
15–22.5 70
13.5–15 77.5
12–13.5 85
10.5–12 92.5
9–10.5 100
8–9 110
7–8 125
6–7 150
5–6 175
4–5 200
3–4 250
2–3 300
1–2 400
Less than 1 500

Estimate based on density alone. Actual NMFC class also weighs stowability, handling, and liability, and some commodities have a fixed class by NMFC number. Confirm with a quote.
